Poetic Projects & Final Projects. May 11 @ 11:30 in ICE

We will be viewing your ‘Poetic Project’ during the session this week as well as dealing with your proposals for your Final Projects.

Make sure you have this information about your final projects for each of your ideas on your blog:

Subject: 100 words on the subject – what is it about and who is in it?

Style: 100 words on the approach of the film – what style, mode or visuals do you have in mind? What is the audio soundscape?

Schedule: 100 words – when and where will it be filmed?

Curate Project

There is a plan for the Curate Project that you all need to contribute to. A small group will take responsibility of building the project on Klynt but each student will need to provide the following:

  1. Your 2 minute ‘Poetic Project’
  2. A 30 second clip that you filmed of  the ‘Land Art’ that you created on Raasay either in the wood or on the beach.
  3. A 30 second interview of yourself (in English or Chinese) where you talk about the experience of making the work – the concept of feeling not meaning.

The Klynt group will define the face of the project. Here is one that could be useful as a model. Filming Revolution

Before we start putting the Klynt project together we need to prepare all of the media that we have already edited in Premiere, FCPX, Photoshop, audition etc.

The video codecs and output are really important to follow. The video has to be output as Mp4 with H264 codec. They recommend the maximum size to be 720p. This is a 16:9 ratio of 1280pixels x 720pixels.

All files need to be optimised as the whole Klynt project will exist online so the smaller the file sizes of audio (Mp3) Images (GIF, JPEG or PNG)  the better the experience for people accessing our stuff. That is there is less chance, even on slower connections, of the video, audio stopping to buffer.

Final Projects

There were some good proposals today discussed for your Final Projects and each week students will need to present their ideas in class so that we can discuss them and make plans for production. The students that are planning to shoot outside the UK will need to present first as we also need to complete an Application for Remote Study.

By next week all of you should have 2 or 3 ideas up on your blog which can include imagery, a written proposal and any research material that you feel relates to the project. As usual please include influences and inspirations that you may have. Each idea should have:

100 words on the subject – what is it about and who is in it?

100 words on the approach of the film – what style, mode or visuals do you have in mind? What is the audio soundscape?

100 words – when and where will it be filmed?

Please start a category for M104 Final Project and start making notes on a regular basis and remember to add imagery!

The deadline for submission of your Final Project including your blog is Thursday 24th August.

Influences: Land Art

Land Art is a movement that uses the natural landscape to create site-specific structures, art forms, and sculptures. The movement grew out of Conceptualism and Minimalism, it began in the 1960’s and 70’s and was a rejection of growing commercialisation in society and the grotesque commercial behavior of the art market. It wanted to follow a ‘purer’ approach to art with the use of natural materials and site-specific works that could not be ‘sold’. The artists were influenced by the use of simple materials as seen in Arte Povera as well as the social sculptures and performances of artists like Joseph Beuys.

Materials used for Land Art were extracted directly from nature, such as stones, water, gravel, and soil. Influenced by prehistoric artworks such as Stonehenge, artists left their structures exposed to the elements. They were ephemeral and often disintegrated. The photographic recording was often the only remnant of the artwork as in the work of Richard Long

Work was often made in direct response to the site, with materials being used depending on the artists physical experience of the environment. These were chosen very carefully. The construction process itself became part of the artwork and the interaction of the artist’s body with the landscape was an important element. These were site-specific works that rejected the formal art world and required viewers to engage in the process of looking in a simple but also extreme way in terms of focus. We want you to develop this way of working as an extension of the Kino Eye.  In this instance, and just like the Land Artists, we will reject mainstream decadence and celebrate decay. Andy Goldsworthy explains his approach and the process of work some of which we will be interesting for us to explore on Raasay.
